Love

We talk a grweat deal about love in the Western world, but we do very little about it.  We treat the Golden Rule as if it were the exception rather than the rule.  We pretend to a creed in which most of us do not believe, reserving its ritual celebration for those occasions when collectively we ostentatiously burn or particular brand of incense before our empty shrines.  This is nihilism, it is hypocrisy; it represents the abdication from himanity which leads to dehumanization.

It is not sports or circuses that will provide the solution to the problems of human aggressiveness, but the restoration to that humanity which all humans possess as a potentiality, and through which alone one learns to become humane being, through love.  The only way one learns to love is by being loved.  This is neither a fantasy nor a theory.  It is a fact-a verifiable fact.  Prophets, simmering with millennial ardor, have long preached the virtures of love, but few have the action it produces, love has assumed a ritual significance, but for the most part failed to spell out its real meaning as involvement in the sense of something that one does, something that is  part of the conduct of one's EVERYDAY life.  Let us  always remember that humanity is not so much an inheritance as it is an achievement.  Our true inheritance lies in our ability to make and shape ourselves, not the creatures but the creators of our destiny.[which is what males of the larger society try to control!].p.324-425
